In a struggle to be happy and free

Drystone Wall

Killing the golden goose

If you’re not convinced Microsoft is going down the shitter, all you have to do is listed to Microsoft itself. Take what Steve Ballmer, the CEO himself, says according to Macworld:

As PC users clamour for Microsoft to continue to support Windows XP, company CEO Steve Ballmer called the Vista OS “a work in progress” at an annual Seattle event on Thursday.

“It’s a very important piece of work. We did a lot of things right and have a lot of things we need to learn from. You never want to let five years go between releases,” he said.

He makes a big deal about having gone five years between releases because he’s the CEO and has money on his mind. Me, I’m a user and I’m thinking more about how he’s calling a product that’s been out for 15 months “a work in progress.” He might as well say, “All of you who bought Vista? Fuck you, chumps,” and then laugh. Bill Gates is already talking about the next version of Windows so I’m forced to assume Vista will continue to be a work in progress until it’s dropped. Even then it won’t be finished, just dropped.

Windows Vista is this decade’s incarnation of Windows ME and DOS 4.01.

The difference being Windows ME took two years to produce, or maybe one, depending when Win98 Second Ed came out. Five years is a long time and a large pile of shiny gold rocks for an interim OS release.
