Wish Them Well

Spirits turned bitter by the poison of envy
Always angry and dissatisfied
Even the lost ones, the frightened and mean ones
Even the ones with the Devil inside!

Thank your stars you’re not that way
Turn your back and walk away!
Don’t even pause and ask them why;
Turn around and say goodbye!
Wish them well!

All that you can do is wish them well

That’s Rush’s “Wish Them Well” from their Clockwork Angels album and I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. Not exactly as stated in the song, however. Their examples are people who are just awful to you, and of course, what else can you do but cut them loose? My thoughts however are more about the people who just sort of slip away from us. No big clash or fight, they just disappear.

A woman I know told me she was going to visit her mom and she’d give me a call when she returned home. That was about a decade ago. I noticed that I had been doing the reaching out so I left it up to her. It disappoints me, but I’m not upset. There are only so many hours in the day and we can’t each maintain a million friendships.

I know that I have let people slip away just as others have let me slip away. It happens and it’s not always something done with intent. Regardless, it still makes me a bit sad.

  1. This seems like such an apt entry on which to leave a reply, Rick! We are still “in touch” through this blog. You post, I read. I’m so glad when you do.
