Taking a page from the music industry playbook, representatives of Prince have sent cease and desist notices out to a number of fan websites devoted to him and his music, the CBC reports.

According to a statement from Prince Fans United, sites have received noticed to stop “all use of photographs, images, lyrics, album covers and anything linked to Prince’s likeness.” A representative of the firm acting on Prince’s behalf said, “The dispute, in so far as there is one, is related to the use of photographs and images of Prince, many of which are Prince’s copyright.” This makes me laugh. Granted he might hold copyright on some of the images, he certainly does not hold copyright on his likeness.

A group of site owners vow to fight, but I question what they’d gain if they win. Why would they want to use their own money to promote an artist who would resort to a legal bludgeon to prevent them?
