Star Trek heresy

Wil Wheaton said:

I’m going to commit heresy right now and say what few people are willing to say out loud: most of the Star Trek movies are absolute garbage. There have been ten Trek movies, and I’d say that two of them are accessible to mainstream audiences, another two are great, and the remaining six are nearly unwatchable.

In his entry “ ‘reinventing?’ uh-oh. i’m not sure how i feel about this,” Wheaton discusses comments made by J.J Abrams about his plans for the new Star Trek movie he’s directing.  Speaking directly to the quote above however, I think what he says is so obviously true that I’d be surprise if anyone argued. I was going to ask if a statement can be heretical if it’s obviously true, but I quickly remembered dogma and truth aren’t necessarily related.

Two accessible and two are great, the implication being that there is no overlap. Hmmm, I’m going to have to think about this.

I will say that most of the Star Trek films certainly are nearly unwatchable, and that’s being polite about it.

Sad but true. This is what happens when the studio’s need for a cash grab outweighs the need to make a work of art. Star Trek has always been a cash cow for Paramount. When they ended the Enterprise series, they figured out they could make money off reruns just as easily as making a new show.
