According to the Wired article,  “Why Yes, We’d Take 557 HP and 33 MPG,” the designers at AMG, Mercedes-Benz’s performance division, are doing some amazing things. Witness the new version of the Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG. Its 5.5 litre V‑8 delivers 557 HP and 590 lb-ft of torque. That’ll get you from 0 – 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. And that’s not even the most amazing part! The fuel economy rating for this car is 24 mpg combined and 33 mpg highway. A 2011 Honda Civic with a 4 cylinder engine gets 24 mpg combined with 29 mpg highway.

I do note that the AMG’s city fuel economy rating is conspicuous in its absence so it must not be very impressive, but still. It’s good to see that we can continue to wring more efficiency from the gasoline we use in our cars.
