Spectacle of excellence

This afternoon, I watched a few programs I had recorded during the week. In between, I noticed the Superbowl pregame show being aired on NBC. Why does the pregame show started at 1 p.m. while kickoff is scheduled for 6:28 p.m., a mere 5½ hours later? What do they do to fill that time? At about 2 p.m., the commentator updated the viewers about the current location of the Pittsburgh Steelers. They were still at their hotel. And there was someone at the hotel to confirm this information. Via the miracle of satellite relays, the viewers were treated to the spectacle of the team’s bus as it sat idle and empty.

Do people really watch this stuff?
